Toyota issues recall for 50,000 US vehicles due to concerns of airbag-related 'injury or death'
Toyota has told owners of 50,000 older cars in the US to fix them right away because their Takata airbags could explode and be deadly. The warning is for Toyota models made in 2003 to 2005. If the airbag goes off, a part inside might explode and send sharp metal pieces flying, possibly hurting or killing people in the car. The affected vehicles are the 2003-2004 Corolla, 2003-2004 Corolla Matrix, and 2004-2005 RAV4.
Takata's airbag troubles have caused the largest safety recall in the car industry, involving over 100 million products and 20 carmakers. Takata faced recalls, lawsuits, and a US criminal investigation before filing for bankruptcy in 2017. Toyota recently faced other issues, like suspending shipments due to problems in certification tests for some diesel engines. Toyota Industries employees were found to have manipulated horsepower tests. Toyota is also dealing with misconduct at Daihatsu, a subsidiary, for falsifying safety tests. Despite these challenges, Toyota sold a record 11.2 million vehicles in 2023, staying the world's top-selling carmaker for the fourth year, ahead of Volkswagen, which sold 9.2 million vehicles last year.
